The Boroughs Store

How has your business been affected by COVID-19 and the changes to society that have resulted?

We support a variety of local designers and makers - 80% of our stock comes from a 10 km radius to the store - if we go they all go. Our business has remained open operating very differently. We are determined to honour the artists we have committed to exhibit, we are still launching the books we have promised to launch. We are promoting the businesses around us that haven’t already closed doors. Keeping our local community buoyant is most crucial for us at this time.

How has your business adapted? Are you now offering different products or services?

We can allow 2 people in the store at a time - we have gloves at the door for customers to wear and keep. We're taking phone orders and are delivering purchases by bike. People can message us on social media, email us and phone us, we can take you through the store via video or send pictures. We don’t own a car and usually use a share car but for obvious reasons, we are sticking to bike deliveries and have a post code radius on our website. We are transitioning products over to our newly formed online, this all takes time but it’s happening. The thing that people love about our store is the experience of being in our store, we can offer this as best we can by offering all the service the two of us can.

How can local people support you?

Promotion is the key we are now competing with a massive online pool of resources.

We want to stay buoyant for our community, the whole ethos of the shop is about acting local,

Books at Manic

How has your business been affected by COVID-19 and the changes to society that have resulted?

We are a wholesale distributor of art, architecture and design books, both imported and local. Over the last two weeks orders from the retailers we supply have ground to a halt as they are closed or operating at reduced capacity and want to minimise their inventory and debt. We are anticipating that we will get no orders from retailers during the period we must all distance ourselves from each other physically in order to slow the spread of COVID-19.

How has your business adapted? Are you now offering different products or services?

We have an online store for orders from individuals, which usually only contributes a small amount of sales, but we're trying to start doing a social media and email newsletter campaign to drive more traffic to to our online store by offering 10% off all orders with a code MANIC2020. We already offer free delivery and can drop off in Brunswick and surrounding suburbs.

How can local people support you?

We'd like to promote online sales on our website to local people. If they look at our website or Instagram they can see our books and we are offering 10% off all online orders and will deliver locally.
Our Instagram will also have details of books for isolation themed by different topics - for example, art and craft books for kids. We normally have a big warehouse sale once or twice a year of very slightly damaged books or books we've used as samples that are very reduced in price and this sale is very well attended by locals, especially artists and students, so we are also going to feature small batches of sale books on Instagram and people can phone, email or DM us to arrange delivery and payment.

Sonic State Design

How has your business been affected by COVID-19 and the changes to society that have resulted?

I am a freelance sound designer and composer, and sound engineer. I was on tour with Tim Minchin when the ban on 500 plus gathering came in. A 5 week tour was curtailed after one week. I was due to go straight from that tour into an independent theatre show at Fortyfivedownstairs, and from that straight into a show with Melbourne Theatre Company. All that work has evaporated.

How has your business adapted? Are you now offering different products or services?

I have a professional recording studio, but there are limited opportunities for making new recordings with musicians and voice over artists under the social distancing rules. However, i can mix existing audio works, and create content.

How can local people support you?

Yes, if members of the community need sound design or music for their online content, podcasts, film, or documentary then i can help with that. Also if folks have sound recordings that need mixing or cleaning up to make them more usable, then that is also something I can help with.

Mini Maestros

How has your business been affected by COVID-19 and the changes to society that have resulted?

Our face-to-face classes, of up to 10 children (maximum) per class and their carers, are not able to run. We took the responsible decision to cease in-person classes and go online before our last week of Term 1 classes. Some of our loyal families are able to continue in Term 2, while some others are financially unable to make it work.

Without required student numbers in Term 2, we are likely to run out of funds to stay in business for Term 3.
